Globalizaton

Globalization: This term is hard for me to wrap my mind around. However, after reading the article I have a better picture of the meaning behind the word. To me globalization is the idea of expanding ideas from a small concept and enhancing those ideas to a bigger market. Globalization is an important idea to keep the world moving forward. The article stated. "In the span of a century, the economic driver has shifted first from agriculture, then to manufacturing, and now at the beginning of the 21st century, to information." No the world has to act on the idea of Globalization to keep on moving forward.

The article discussed ideas of how to make field of assistive technology more globally known. Also, how the world market has changed in improving large and small businesses. These businesses are forced to be creative and inventive when trying to sell their products across the world market. In the article it touched on how using the web and 2.0 tools and how using those sources has created a "multibillion dollar industry." Ultimately, this article was showing how companies are reaching out to the world market to sell there products.

My reactions towards this article are relatively positive. I like the idea that companies are expanding their markets and are trying to be inventive to reach the population. However, I think it is a disadvantage for smaller businesses who have to compete against huge, popular corporations.  For example companies trying to sell mp3 players are not getting as many products sold as the Apple Corporation. I would assume that it is challenging and frustrating for these smaller companies to be as successful as other stronger corporations. In conclusion I believe that globalization is a stepping stone to the future and is helping society become more tech savy!

Policy/politics Article

Instantaneously, when I'm talking to someone and they refer to the word policy I think of rules. Rules or regulations are meant to be followed in society. The issue I choose directly relates to my first article post on my blog allowing schools to use internet access. I wanted to connect my first article with my second article involving the issue of cyberbullying.

This journal article addressed the issues of how to prevent cyberbullying within schools. In 2007 proposed legislation was written about how schools should react to cyberbullying. This new issues is taking schools by storm. It is proposed from this article that schools should create a plan for issues dealing with cyberbullying and cyberthreats. School districts in Washington and Oregon have dealt with issues involved with cyberbullying in legalized cases. However, School districts are having having difficulty battling this issue based on the cyberattacks happening outside of school but treating students in their district. Ultimately, school districts want to eliminate the issue of cyberbullying at their schools, and make each student feel free unnecessary harassment.

As a future teacher, I believe that what schools districts are doing to protect their students is a great step towards stopping bullying altogether in schools. Now I understand that their will always be the issue of bullying in the classroom/school, but I do believe that educators, principals, and others who work in school districts can try to put a stop to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can potentially leave life long effects on the student. Students involved in attacking an individual using the internet should face consequences. Since this article was written in 2007, I did some investigating on my current high schools policy for cyberbullying. It stated under the bylaws and policies that cyberbullying would be unacceptable behavior. After finding that out I do believe that school districts have reviewed this issue and are trying to prevent cyberbullying from happeing in the future. Hopefully, when I am an educator this issue will be less prevalent.

Access Article

Personally, I define access as being granted permission to do something. Typically, if an individual is not granted access to do something, it usually has a negative consequence. The issue I stumbled upon was allowing schools to have students access to the internet during school hours.

The article reflected upon both sides of the issue of granting open internet access during school hours and also blocking internet access while school is in secession. Some schools had the mentality that blocking specific websites would prevent children from being exposed to cyber harassment. However, other schools that allowed open internet usage would help children learn about web safety, so when students are at home they are more safe when using the internet.  Of course the schools who allowed open internet sites still had issues with students abusing the open access privilege. Finally, the article discussed ways of keeping children safe on the internet. Offering teachers and parents classes of how to keep their studetns/children safe while surfing the web.

After reading this article I came to a couple conclusions about student access to the internet during school hours. First, I believe that school districts should block internet sites for multiple reasons. During schools hours, students should be focused on learning instead of social networking sites, also, bulling is a huge issues for all schools districts within the United States and world for that matter, cyber bullying brings bullying to a new extreme, it is hurting students and causing unnecessary harassment. Second, I liked the idea of giving students access, but it is too big of a risk in schools. Chat rooms are dangerous on the internet and students need to know how to protect themselves. Also, the school would pick up unnecessary virus creating technical problems for the district. Lastly, I do believe that teachers and parents should be educated in internet safety and teach their students/children to properly protect themselves while interacting on the internet. As a future teacher, I want to teach my students how to be safe on the net!
