Policy/politics Article

Instantaneously, when I'm talking to someone and they refer to the word policy I think of rules. Rules or regulations are meant to be followed in society. The issue I choose directly relates to my first article post on my blog allowing schools to use internet access. I wanted to connect my first article with my second article involving the issue of cyberbullying.

This journal article addressed the issues of how to prevent cyberbullying within schools. In 2007 proposed legislation was written about how schools should react to cyberbullying. This new issues is taking schools by storm. It is proposed from this article that schools should create a plan for issues dealing with cyberbullying and cyberthreats. School districts in Washington and Oregon have dealt with issues involved with cyberbullying in legalized cases. However, School districts are having having difficulty battling this issue based on the cyberattacks happening outside of school but treating students in their district. Ultimately, school districts want to eliminate the issue of cyberbullying at their schools, and make each student feel free unnecessary harassment.

As a future teacher, I believe that what schools districts are doing to protect their students is a great step towards stopping bullying altogether in schools. Now I understand that their will always be the issue of bullying in the classroom/school, but I do believe that educators, principals, and others who work in school districts can try to put a stop to cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can potentially leave life long effects on the student. Students involved in attacking an individual using the internet should face consequences. Since this article was written in 2007, I did some investigating on my current high schools policy for cyberbullying. It stated under the bylaws and policies that cyberbullying would be unacceptable behavior. After finding that out I do believe that school districts have reviewed this issue and are trying to prevent cyberbullying from happeing in the future. Hopefully, when I am an educator this issue will be less prevalent.
